A close encounter with a full-grown elephant changed the life of Dag Goering, veterinarian, photographer and founder of Hidden Places Travel. While working as a volunteer vet in India, he was examining a baby elephant. “Its mother suddenly grabbed me with her trunk, pulled me close and stared me in the eye,” says Goering. “It was a magical moment. An epiphany.”
With his wife, author Maria Coffey, he set off on a quest to explore the world of elephants and find ways to help these amazing giants. In this stunning multi-media show Goering and Coffey share their adventurous journeys through India, SE Asia and Africa, and the discoveries that led them to establish an elephant conservation initiative, funded by Hidden Places Travel.
Over the past year and a half alone, Hidden Places has funded grassroots elephant projects in Thailand and Kenya, to a total of $15,000. Their new Anti-Poaching Project is funding patrols in the Kirisia Hills of Northern Kenya where the killing of elephants for ivory isrampant. Please join Maria and Dag for their presentation, and help save elephants!
Dag Goering and Maria Coffey's life-long passion for exploration has evolved into published books and photographs, an adventure travel company and their advocacy work for elephant welfare and conservation. Dag Goering has had several solo photo exhibitions, including two at the Banff Mountain Festivals, and his images have been widely published in books and prominent newspapers and magazines such as National Geographic Adventure, Elle and The New York Times.
They co-authored Visions of the Wild, about their kayak circumnavigation of Vancouver Island, and worked together on the photographic books Sailing Back in Time and Jungle Islands. Coffey has written nine other internationally published books, including Where the Mountain Casts its Shadow, which won the Banff Mountain Literature Prize, and the Oprah Winfrey endorsed Explorers of the Infinite. They are presently co-writing a book on their experience working with elephants.
